What are you PROUD of?

How often do you ask yourself what you are proud of? It is a task that should be done often. However, we get so caught up in our day to day efforts to do better than we did the day before that we often forget to stop and look at what we have accomplished. I am very much at fault here. I constantly look at what I have NOT done to my satisfaction rather than reflect on what has gone well. In Advisory a week or so ago I told my students that I was proud to be their Advisory teacher, and I truly meant it. When I had them tell the group what they were proud of, it nearly brought tears to my eyes to hear their amazing stories. We all need to take pause out of our hectic lives and look inside ourselves to see what we have accomplished. It is only then that we are able to renew our purpose and focus to move forward in our endeavors. I am going to shout loudly today what I am PROUD of!!

I am PROUD to be the mother of two amazing beautiful girls!
I am PROUD to be married to a man that is my rock, my soul, and my best friend!
I am PROUD to have parents that have supported me through every endeavor I have attempted!
I am PROUD to have siblings that are making a difference in their community!
I am PROUD to be the principal of Fairfield High!
I am PROUD that I was the principal of Crystal Middle School!
I am PROUD to be an educator!
I am PROUD that I am willing to take risks for the good of others!
I am PROUD that I can say that I will NEVER let my integrity be compromised!
I am PROUD that I can say that I will always fight for what is best for our students!

Take pause today and tell someone, even if it is just yourself, what you are PROUD of!

Students Leading Their Learning

I am going to continue to challenge each of you to rethink your approach to your daily lessons. Why? Because I want our students to be engaged, excited, and motivated to learn. I don't want our students learning "because they have to" I want our students learning because THEY WANT TO.

We have all heard the saying, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." We can apply this seamlessly to the classroom. Give a student a task and he will complete the task. Teach a student to problem solve and he will have a skill for a lifetime.

Look at yourself for a moment. There are hundreds of professional development opportunities available to educators. Which ones do you attend? You attend the ones that are intriguing to you. You attend the ones that you feel have value to what you are doing. You attend the ones that will provide you meaningful information that you can take with you and implement right away. You wouldn't attend a professional development opportunity that seemed of no value because you wouldn't want to waste your time. You have the freedom to choose what you want to attend. You have AUTONOMY. There is PURPOSE. You are searching for MASTERY. You are innately driven and motivated as a result of that autonomy, mastery, and purpose. See Daniel Pink's DRIVE. http://goo.gl/PfBnYj

Now, take a look at our students. They must attend school each day. They must attend six periods a day. They must attend the courses that their schedule outlines for them. The drive to be motivated becomes tough at this point. That is where the classroom environment is such a key factor. How can you design your classroom environment so that all students are engaged, all students find purpose/relevance, all students are valued, and all students are encouraged to engage in student led learning? It takes a mind-shift. Some of you are already beginning to design learning spaces like this. Kudos to you!! Many of you want to change your learning spaces but aren't sure where to begin. I also know that some of your are skeptical that change is needed.

While at Crystal we had two years where we offered a full day of student led, student designed learning. Teachers were not teachers on those days they were facilitators. There were no grades. What happened? Students planned out an entire day of learning for themselves. They planned out their day based on what they were interested in. Students were the most engaged we had ever seen them. Students were so excited about their learning. Here is a video that captures a few of those moments. What if you designed your classroom to be so innovative that you were the facilitator and students led the learning? It is a challenge I pose to each of you. Is there anyone willing or ready to take that on?

There is a teacher that I have been following for awhile on Twitter. His name is Don Wettrick and he works at Noblesville High School in Noblesville, Indiana. You can follow him on Twitter @DonWettrick. His webpage has a plethora of resources on Genius Hour, (student led project based learning), please check it out: http://theinnovationteacher.com/

Continuing the Cycle: Experiment, Adapt, Share and Integrate

We have discovered a cycle at FHS that is working and increasing the strength of our programs. Staff are experimenting with new strategies in the classroom, they are adapting them to work best with their students, they are then sharing their ideas with colleagues who then are integrating the ideas into their programs.  This cycle is working and I am so excited for the outcomes for our students. We need to continue to experiment, adapt, share and integrate!!

Our FHS Tech Slam was a perfect example. Teachers attended the GAFE Summit and were super pumped about what they learned. A week later they were presenting in a fast paced "slam" environment to colleagues. Literally, the next day, others on campus were already trying the things they had learned. The upside for our students? Students will be experiencing more engaging and more rigorous lessons across the campus. This cycle continues to get us one step closer to realizing our goal of having all FHS students graduate high school and departing high school college and career ready.

Here is the Youtube link for our FHS Tech Slam:  FHS Tech Slam 2015

The cycle is also being seen with our students. The students involved in the VEX robotics club are constantly going through a cycle of experimentation, adaptation, sharing, and integration. Since our partnership with Suisun Valley, David Weir and First Lego League, our students are now sharing and building capacity with the elementary students.

At the Career Fair we held on Wednesday, industry reps from all over Solano County shared potential job opportunities with our students. I can't begin to tell you how many conversations took place about internships. Our students were asking for internships and the industry reps were ready to offer!! Another great example of collaboration and sharing!

Designing the Most Engaging Learning Environment

When I reflect back on my elementary, middle, and high school classrooms I see rows of desks, a teacher desk, and chalkboards. Fast forward to 2015. If you were to ask an average adult walking down the street to describe what a classroom looks like, he/she may respond with a similar description to mine. However...... what is the most conducive learning environment for students? Is it sitting in hard chairs and desks in rows for hours and hours on end? Is that a mirror environment to many of our leading industries today? I would have to argue that it is not. We were lucky this year to get several classrooms outfitted with furniture that lends itself to movement and continual redesign. Our integration of Apple TV's allows for the instructor in the room to be mobile and not just located at the front of the room. We want our students to be involved in problem solving through group work, critical analysis, and trial and error. We need to design the learning environments to match that. Take a look at your classroom on Monday morning and see what small tweaks you may make that could make a positive impact on your students' learning.

Here is a link to a great article that discusses the different set ups in classrooms and what they mean for the learners.  The article focuses on the old classroom setup as one of "transmission" and the new collaborative minded integrated setups as one of "interaction."  Moving from "single purpose" to "multi purpose." http://derekbruff.org/?p=3032

Here are a few pics of our very own FHS classrooms that have moved towards setups that are geared towards "interaction" and "multi purpose."
